Safeguarding Digital Safety and Academic Freedom

Miranda Yates, a Senior Program Officer at Robert Wood Johnson Foundation recently shared the following statement on LinkedIN

As the largest private philanthropy committed to a future where health is no longer a privilege, but a right, answering the urgency of today is not optional, it is our responsibility. We, RWJF, stand with grantees and the research community whose work dedicated to advancing health and wellbeing for people of all races, gender identities, sexual orientations, citizenship status, and wealth status is under attack. In addition to cancelled funding and new restrictions within universities, too many scholars and researchers are experiencing online harassment and threats due to their public commitment to health equity.

That’s why this summer, RWJF began funding two organizations with deep experience and expertise in digital safety and academic freedom: PEN America and American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U). These organizations offer assistance to researchers and scholars seeking guidance in navigating today’s challenging environment and in continuing to drive their critical research forward. Services and resources include individual consultations, workshops and training materials, institutional consultations, networks, and learning communities.

Here are a few:
*Online Abuse Defense Training: https://pen.org/online-abuse-digital-safety/online-abuse-defense-training-program/
*Campus Conflict and Conversation Help Desk: https://www.aacu.org/initiatives/institute-for-democracy-and-higher-education/helpdesk
*What To Do If You’ve Been Doxed or Placed on a Watchlist tipsheet: https://pen.org/what-to-do-if-youve-been-doxed-or-placed-on-a-watchlist/

These programs aim to provide access to timely and relevant safety-related information, to create connections with other people who have had similar experiences, and to build community at a moment which can feel overwhelming and isolating.
