A Note on News – A Letter to Partners

Dear Health Partners,

So many of you have shared with me that “there’s so much going on, I can’t even keep up with it.”

You’ve confided that you’ve begun to avoid the news, choosing to avoid the overwhelm. I understand the inclination, but I’m one of those other folks who can’t seem to look away. Here’s some of the big stories I’m following, just in case you’ve missed anything in recent weeks.

I especially appreciated this editorial from the Builders Movement, 6 SURPRISING BELIEFS DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS SHARE. I think sometimes we forget that we neighbors, not enemies and we have a lot more in common than we may realize.

Social media memes send me scurrying to confirm things like the White House lists 20 objectionable Smithsonian exhibits, artworks and the National Guard mobilizing in 19 states amid immigration, crime crackdown, including Virginia while some leaders push back, claiming the deployments would be unlawful.

With mid-terms approaching and the recent challenges, purges, and changes related to voter rolls and registration, it’s a good idea for community members to check on their voter registration status. Virginia voters can do so HERE while North Carolina voters can check their registration HERE. NC voters should also check to see if their registration has been flagged as incomplete and needing repair HERE.

Affordable Care Act tax credits will expire the end of this year. Carolina Forward offers an excellent overview of how Rising Premiums Threaten Families, Hospitals, and Communities Across NC while Administrators with Virginia’s Insurance Marketplace warn of premium increases but say they’re still calculating impact and hope to have updated information on the Virginia Marketplace within a month. Open enrollment begins November 1.

Some doctors worry that massive cuts to Medicaid will leave pregnant people needing to drive hundreds of miles for prenatal care and delivery services and NC looks to new rural hospital fund to offset billions in projected funding loss.

Here at home in the Dan River Region, I suspect our community partners might also be interested in the following announcements, events, and resources.

  • Browser blocking access to TheHealthCollab.news? We’ve learned that some firewalls automatically block newly created domains and that this block could last 30 days. This should resolve on its own very soon, or you can ask your IT administrator to add it to your firewall’s safe site list. (Our 30-day period should be up at the end of this week!)
  • Getting too many emails? We’re working on a feature to send a weekly digest by default, but it’s not cooperating. For now to receive a weekly digest, you will need to select “Manage Subscriptions” from any email you receive from News and Notes after subscribing and select “Weekly”.
